What we’ve been doing catch up!

Alright, I admit it! I can be such a slacker! Here’s what we’ve been doing the last few weeks, just copied and pasted from my notes…  not many pics yet, haven’t had a chance to taking many. There’s a couple though!

It’s been a busy few weeks!

Week beginning Monday 11th January

Maths

Niamh showed very little interest in completing her worksheet, half finished and executed badly.

Paddy requested a worksheet like Niamh’s and completed it with help. Recognised and wrote numbers independently.

Wednesday – continuation of poetry study to review previous work on symmetry. Symmetry worksheet completed. Again on Friday, self motivated Symmetry drawn independently.

Online maths games.

Niamh still argumentative over doing worksheets and writing numbers backwards. Paddy again, executed well, tried hard, very good.

Copywork

Incorporated into projects and other work. For the most part executed well.

Spelling and neatness has improved.

Letter Practice

Paddy, Letter Tracers, self motivated. Letter recognition and copying, all 26 letters executed well and enjoyed. See work book.

Niamh, Cursive Word Tracers, self motivated.

ReadingTo gauge improvement since the Christmas holiday we began reviewing the Ladybird Reading Scheme. Niamh is still having problems with He and His, confusing the two. No longer needs to spell out words.

Paddy is remembering, spelling out and recognising different words and letter sounds.

FrenchBBC Schools online songs and games.

Unit StudyNiamh chose Ancient Egypt and have so far created their visual journals and discussed, explored, cut out pictures and wrote about the Nile. Also Mapwork.

Poetry Study

The Tyger, William Blake.

Terms discussed with Niamh: Burning Bright, she thought of flames, fire, colour of a tiger’s fur and a tiger’s eyes.

Immortal Hand or Eye, God made tigers although she thinks William Blake is wrong because he only describes one tiger and God made lots. A beginners understanding of singular and plural?

Fearful, some people are scared of tigers.

Symmetry, discussed symmetry.

Little interest from Paddy, briefly joined in discussing symmetry and looking at pictures of tigers.

Book of Centuries and Art Appreciation Combined

Van Gogh and Starry Night.

Niamh coloured in a drawing of Starry Night. Paid good attention while I read a short biography.

Thoughts on Starry Night –

She liked the curly cloud, it looked like the wind was blowing it. Very bright stars and moon that look shiny because he used a lot of white and yellow. Briefly discussed white light and colour spectrum to explain this.

Discussed using vivid colours and wild brush strokes and the effects this can achieve.

Introduction to Shakespeare

First two pages of Antony and Cleopatra read. Little interest in this version so will change to another style of Shakespeare Story book. Will take a short break from this. Wrote Antony and Cleopatra small and neatly on a picture of the Globe Theatre.

Made puppets of Mark Antony, Cleopatra and the Asp.

Science

Freezing and Melting. Introduced the concept of expansion and contraction to Paddy by using 2 bottles with 1 litre of water in each. We froze one of them and then compared the volume in each bottle.

Niamh conducted an experiment about which would melt the quickest using butter, chocolate, ice and wax. See work book.
